POWER IN NATURE COALITION THANKS LEADERS FOR MOVING PROPOSITION 4 TO THE CALIFORNIA BALLOT

Sacramento, CA — The Power In Nature Coalition today thanked California legislative leaders for voting to place Proposition 4 on the November 2024 ballot. Proposition 4 will help ensure that California continues its progress toward its goal of protecting 30% of lands and coastal waters by 2030 (30×30).

Proposition 4 includes critical investments in clean water, funding to protect against wildfire, sea level rise, flooding, and extreme heat, and investments in our farms, natural lands, inland waters, coastal waters, and parks for the benefit of all Californians.

“Globally and locally, we are facing the intertwined crises of climate change and loss of wildlife habitat,” said Tomas Valadez, CA Policy Associate, Azul. “Those impacts are taking a toll on some of our most vulnerable communities, who are facing flooding, wildfire, poor air quality, and lack of clean water. We welcome this new bond opportunity to help combat these effects of climate change.”

Scientists worldwide agree that in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change and help protect wildlife at risk of extinction, we must – at a minimum – protect 30% of our lands and coastal waters by 2030. In 2020, Governor Newsom committed California to the 30×30 goal. In 2023, that goal became state law. California is making strong progress towards 30×30 but 6 million acres still must be conserved in less than 6 years.

This year, California cut more than $1 billion in natural resources funding in the state budget. These budget cuts put the state’s momentum towards 30×30 in jeopardy. Proposition 4 will provide critical funding towards achieving 30×30 as well as investments in protecting clean water sources and wildfire prevention.
